National stand up paddle titles in Newcastle
WATER sport’s newest craze hit the Hunter today as stand up paddle boarders took on the surf at Nobbys beach.
The Stand Up Paddleboard Association of Australia’s national titles started today with another three days to look forward to.
Curious minds who are new to the sport will be able to witness how it's done at Nobbys Beach, Redhead Beach and Throsby Creek.
Peter Japp, event director, said he was pleased to bring the inaugural event to Hunter shores.
‘‘This is our first year and we’re pleased the Newcastle Stand Up Paddleboard Club hosted us,’’ he said.
‘‘The sport is coming a long way at the moment and it’s the fastest growing water sport in the world.’’
The event has attracted more than 150 entrants and organisers have plans to expand for next year’s competition.
More surf events will be held at Nobbys Beach tomorrow with the Downwinder Race kicking off on Saturday at Redhead Beach.
Sunday will feature traditional flat water races at Throsby Creek, where there will also be free demonstrations and lessons available for newcomers.
